Hike "Gorges de l'Alzon et capitelles" (Gard » Uzès) | [Printable version] |

Comment : The course of this hike is a bit strange. Three small circles are followed by a big circle. The circles are linked to each other by a return path. You leave Uzès at the cathedral [2], to walk down the woods to the Sarrasine tower [5], the bridge over the Alzon and a wide grass field with picnic tables. Then you go back up to the starting point passing the ruin of the Tournal Mill. This is the most enjoyable circle of the four. The second circle starts at the Mas de Cazotte. Attention, it might seem illogical but you have to pass the first stone entry of the Mas de Cazotte and to walk on until a metal entry gate. There you turn right and you walk along a wall of stone on a path which was still invisible just before. Arrived at point 3, a black signboard indicated ‘PR39 Déviation provisoire’ [PR39 Provisory diversion]. We continued straight ahead to find out what the problem was. Some stones were shattered over the path, but by dry weather you can easily pass. By rain or just after, there might be a risk of landslip or of slipping on the polished rock. The local hikers did not seem to pay attention to the diversion. The sign did not look new either. The choice is up to you… The only point of interest of the third circle is located on the return path. It is a small cavern [18-19] on the left of a sharp turn after point 8. At least, there is the fourth circle, which is as long as the three other together. Just to see two ‘capitelles’ [12-13], you need to cross a large residential district without importance. In short, a walk which is attractive in the beginning and perfect for a picnic after a visit of Uzès. The car park at the starting point is with charge [1].
